Testing & Evaluation

Having handled multiple spinal cord injury cases throughout California over the years, the attorneys at Bohn & Bohn, LLP understand the important role that testing and evaluation plays in accessing appropriate care and obtaining an adequate financial recovery that adequately compensates the victim for his or her losses.

SCI Symptoms

Although loss of sensation and motor function are the most obvious features of a spinal cord injury, there are other symptoms which may also reveal SCI.  As we have mentioned elsewhere on this site, loss of bowel and bladder control or sexual dysfunction are typical of SCI.  In addition, muscle spasticity, difficulty breathing or trouble with digestion, and problems with heart rate and blood pressure, can all be indicative of an SCI.  If you experience any of these symptoms following a trauma to the spine, you should follow up with your doctor or a neurologist for a more thorough examination related to possible SCI.

Testing and Evaluation

X-rays can identify fractured vertebrae and are usually the first diagnostic test employed.  Other tests include MRIs and CT scans, which can provide higher-resolution images and help spot blood clots or ruptured disks.  Another test called myelography involves injecting a dye into the spinal canal and then conducting x-rays or CT scans.  A neurological exam can also be conducted to gauge muscle strength and motor function, as well as feeling and sensation.

Much of this testing can be performed by your treating physician in the hospital or your regular doctor.  Diagnostic tests may be conducted and read by a radiologist in conjunction with the treating physician.  A neurologist, a doctor specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of the nervous system, may be asked to conduct specific neurologic testing.

While early referral to the hospital's SCI system is still vital to achieving the best outcome, the entire period of testing and evaluation may still be quite lengthy.  A spinal cord injury may initially cause spinal shock, which causes a loss of feeling, muscle movement, and reflexes below the level of injury.  Spinal shock may last only 24 hours, or it may go on for several weeks or even months.  Until the person recovers from spinal shock, it is difficult to assess the true nature of the injury and develop an accurate prognosis.
